Samuel Weir Rion Jr. (Sam) 82, of Georgetown, South Carolina passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Sam was born on September 28,1941 to Samuel & Clara (Port) Rion.
Sam grew up in Georgetown and graduated from Winyah High School. He then went on to The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina graduating in 1965. He then went on to serve his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Navy.
Sam then married his bride of 55 years, Anna (Perry) Rion. They were blessed with two sons. Sam owned and operated Rion’s Shoe Store on Front Street carrying on the family business. Later he became an orthopedic shoe specialist winning several national awards. He was an activity member with the Rotary Club International winning the Rotarian of the Year award in 1977. He also received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Sam was an avid tennis player and enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed cooking and sharing the bounty with his friends and family, especially steaming oysters and cooking whole hogs.
Those left to cherish Sam’s memory include his wife Anna. Sons, Samuel Weir Rion III (Tripp) (Merri Jo) of Georgetown, Son, Herbert Wilhelm (Wil) Rion of Ashville, NC. Adopted daughter Mia Eckerling, and granddaughter, Avery Rion. Sisters, Angie (Joey) Bunn, Julie Rion. Brothers, Jerry (Judy) Rion, Jim (Sarah) Rion, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel & Clara. His Father & Mother in law, Durward and Lolly Perry. His brother & sister in law Jimmy and Sandra Perry.
Family-led Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at Prince George Winyah Parish Church with Pastor Mike Lumpkin officiating.
