Kilgore,SamuelRea Samuel Rea KilgoreSamuel Rea KilgoreALBEMARLE – Samuel Rea Kilgore, M.D., of Albemarle, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at Stanly Regional Medical Center. Dr. Kilgore was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a retired psychiatrist.Born June 3, 1918, in Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Samuel Massey Kilgore and Estelle Rea Kilgore. He attended the Citadel for undergraduate studies and received first honor for having the highest grade average in the school’s history. He attended medical school at Duke University and served as captain in the U.S. Army.Sam was the Medical Director for several mental health centers, including Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center, Fortwood Center, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Coastal Empire Mental Health Center in Beaufort, S.C. He received the Distinguished Life Fellow Award from the American Psychiatric Association. Sam retired from the VA Hospital in Salisbury in 2001.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Samuel Rea Kilgore Jr., and two sisters, Roberta Cox and Adeline Page.He is survived by his wife, Judy Forbis Kilgore; sons Samuel Bradford Kilgore and wife Winter of Raleigh, John Abit Kilgore and wife Sue of Greensboro; daughters Barbara Levine of Durham, Terri Ball and husband Terrell of Spartanburg, S.C.; stepdaughter Marci Rogers of Spartanburg, S.C.; daughter-in-law Ansley Kilgore of Lakeland, Fla.; first wife Barbara Nix Kilgore of Spartanburg, S.C.; and grandchildren Samuel Rea Kilgore III, Christopher and Jeremy Kilgore, Rebecca, Amy and Alison Levine and Alex Ball.Service: 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church of Albemarle with the Rev. Elizabeth Ayscue officiating. Burial will be at Green Lawn Cemetery in Spartanburg, S.C., at 4 p.m. Monday. Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Monday at the church.
