DAVIS, Samuel PINEWOOD, S.C. – Samuel Perry Davis, M.D., 72, husband of Sheila Patricia Hey Davis, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at his home. Born in Sumter County, South Carolina, June 15, 1933, he was a son of the late William Robert Davis, Sr., and the late Gladys Wells Davis. He was a recipient of the James F. Byrnes Scholarship and graduated with a BS degree from The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., where he was a member of the Track Team. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1958. He was a former member of the Medical University of South Carolina Admissions Committee. He was engaged in the practice of General and Family Medicine in Pinewood, S.C. July 1959 until recently. He was a member of the South Carolina Medical Association 1959 to present. He was selected as Physician of the Year for outstanding community service in 1988, the SCAFP Family Physician of the year 1992. Service to the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians included member, Past District Director, Chairman of Board of Directors, President Elect, President, Alternate Delegate and presently Delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a member and past president of Sumter-Clarendon-Lee Medical Society, Seaboard Coastline Surgeons Association, member and past chairman of the Sumter County Board of Health, past member of Wateree District Advisory Board of Health. He was a member and past President of the Sumter-Citadel Club. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was a member of the Board of Directors James F. Brynes Scholars. Dr. Davis was a member of the National Society Sons of The American Revolution, Surgeon General National Society Sons of the American Revolution. He served as Senior State President of the South Carolina Children of the American Revolution, Senior Second Vice President of the National Society Children of the American Revolution. He was a member of Sunset Country Club, Sumter, S.C., Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston, S.C., member and past president Les Trente Dance Club and member of the Trian Dance Club. Surviving are his wife of Pinewood; three sons, Samuel Perry Davis, Jr., and wife Jane of Spartanburg, Richard Leslie Davis and wife Lisa of Norfolk, Va., and Gordon Taylor Davis and wife Ami of Columbia; three grandchildren, Richard Davis, Sarah Davis, and Danielle Davis; two brothers, John C. Davis and wife May, Marion H. Davis, Sr., and wife Judy all of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Robert Davis, Richard Gordon Davis, and a sister, Elizabeth Ardis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, at Grace Baptist Church, Sumter. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 227 E. Clark Street, Pinewood.
