Funeral service for Samuel “Sam” Lewis Adkins, 65, of Federal Way, WA, will be held Thursday, November 12, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, SC, with burial to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Mr. Adkins passed away on Monday, November 2, 2015. He was born December 31, 1949, in Anderson, SC. He was a son of the late Henry Grady Adkins and Mildred Evelyn Wood Adkins. He was a graduate of TL Hanna High School and attended The Citadel, graduating in 1972 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and was the Front Guide of the Summerall Guards. After college he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving on active duty from May 1972 through November 1983 and reserve duty from November 1983 through May of 1998. While in service he attended the U.S. Army Engineer School Officers Basic and Advanced Courses and also the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Mr. Adkins was employed with the Corps of Engineers as Chief, Construction Division, U.S. Army Engineer District in Seattle, WA. Previous assignment was as Chief, Construction Division, U.S. Army Far East District in Seoul, Korea. Other assignments include work in Fort Belvoir, VA, Fort Lee, VA, Fort Stewart, GA, Republic of Philippines, Fort Worth District, USACE, and Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife, Un Joo Paek Adkins; sons, Clarence Michael Giddens (Jill), Ho Kyong Adkins, Seattle, WA; daughter, Ji Yoon Adkins, Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Cameron Michael Giddens and Taylor Nicole Giddens; brothers, Henry Grady Adkins, Jr. (Marcia Kirkland) of Columbia, SC, Bruce Lee Adkins (Phyllis Deal) of Charleston, SC.; nieces and nephews, Carrie Lee Ann Adkins Davies, Susan Mildred Adkins Stabene, Mary Marcene Adkins, Kathryn Lee Deal Adkins, Henry Grady Adkins III, and Andrew Kirkland Adkins. He was predeceased by first wife, Yon Ho Giddens Adkins, and brother, Allen Bomer Adkins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice or to The Citadel Foundation.
