Rudolph Byrd Rustin, Jr., of Charlottesville, Va., entered into eternal rest on March 25, 2022. Rudy was born in Charleston, SC on August 22, 1931, a son of Rudolph Byrd and Alif Irma Rumph Rustin. He attended Charleston High School and was a graduate of the Citadel class of 1953. Rudy was a man of many talents. He was an aerobatic pilot in the Southeast in his 1931 Great Lakes biplane and performed frequently with Bevo Howard as a team. He was as well an expert sailor. Rudy built his own Y Flyer and was competitive on the national level, sailing with his brother, Dr. Dowse Daniel Rustin. He loved to listen to bluegrass music and participated in jams on his banjo regularly. Rudy was also an avid sportsman, hunting and fishing on the Carolina coast. Rudy served in the US Air Force for several years as a radar technician, stationed on Fire Island, Alaska. After leaving the Air Force, he worked for Coastal Butane Gas Company, Overton Container Corporation and lastly as a warehouse manager for Universal Leaf Tobacco Corporation in Wilson, NC. Mr. Rustin is survived by a sister, Ann Glenn of Brunswick, GA and a brother, Dowse Daniel Rustin, MD of Charleston, SC, two sons, Rudolph Rustin of McClellanville, SC, Raiford Rustin of Yonges Island, SC, two daughters, Emily Rustin of Henderson, NC and Anna Rustin of Phoenix, AZ and two grandsons, Jonathan Herrin Rustin of Arlington, VA and Jeffrey Talbott Rustin of Elgin, SC.
