Ronald E. Holmes, Sr. passed away on February 20, 2025, leaving a legacy filled with love and cherished friendships. Born on June 14, 1942, in Edgefield, S.C., to Amos M. Holmes and Aleen McDaniel, Ron’s impact on the lives he touched during his 82 years will be remembered fondly.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Elaine Stanford Holmes; his son, Ronald E. Holmes, Jr. of Tampa, Florida; his daughter, Mary Frances Holmes Franklin (Dean) of Tampa; his daughter, Dallas Stanford Holmes-Thorkildson (Andrew) of Gainesville; and his beloved grandchildren, Hudson Franklin, Parker Franklin, Hayden Holmes, Kenley Holmes, Emani Thorkildson, and infant granddaughter, Thorne Stanford Thorkildson. He is also remembered by his sister-in-law, Rae Dunbar of Gainesville, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will hold him close in their hearts.
A proud graduate of the Citadel Military College in Charleston, S.C., Ron completed his studies in 1960, earning the Whole Man award. He served honorably as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, focusing on special services. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Florida Law School and dedicated 25 years to practicing law in Gainesville, where he cultivated valuable friendships.
Known for his warm nature, playful spirit, and deep love for his dogs, Ron had a special talent for making friends wherever he went. Together with Elaine, he embraced a vibrant social life, surrounded by a loving community. Ron enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including golf, football, and swimming alongside friends at the 300 Club.
Ronald E. Holmes, Sr. will be forever remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family will receive friends Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown, 404 North Main Street, Gainesville.
