SWINSON, Rodney Rodney Southerland Swinson, 87, of Carlisle St., Bamberg, S.C., husband of Marian Pete Swinson, died Wednesday, November 9, 2005, at Bamberg Nursing Center. Mr. Swinson was born October 2, 1918, in Fayetteville, N.C., son of the late Rodney S. Swinson, Sr., and Eloise Brock Hand. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Bamberg. He was Commander of American Legion, Member and Past Master of Oman Lodge 38 for over 50 years, Past District Deputy, Grand Master of 5th Masonic District, also a member of Omar Shrine Temple, Past President of Bamberg Jaycees, Lyons Club, and Trinity United Methodist Men’s Club. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He also served in Korea on Okanawa, with the US Army Engineers. He also retired from the Army Reserve as Lt. Col. He enjoyed golfing and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He was also a Private Pilot and enjoyed helping his friends with his medical trips. He graduated from Bamberg High School and The Citadel in 1940 and was a life-time member of the Brigadier Club. Funeral services will be Sunday, November 13, 2005, 2 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, officiated by Dr. Webb Belangia. Burial to follow in Bamberg County Memory Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be Trinity United Methodist Church Men’s Club and the members of Masonic Lodge 38. Survivors include his wife of the home, one daughter, Linda Swinson Georges and her husband Gregory of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two grandchildren, Lauren and Graham Georges of Chapel Hill, half-brother, Joel W. Hand, Jr., and wife Beulah of Bamberg, SC; three nephews, Joel Hand III and Debbie of Chapel Hill, N.C., Scott Hand and Veridee of Norway, SC, and Shawn Hand and Amy of Rock Hill, S.C.; one niece, Margery Hand Smith and Doug of Lancaster, S.C.; eight great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, mother and step-father, J.W. Hand, Sr., and one brother, Marcus Leigh Swinson. Visitation will be Saturday, November 12, 2005, from 4 to 6 p.m. at COONER FUNERAL HOME.
