Roderick S. Stewart, a resident of Alameda, Calif., passed away peacefully on March 4, 2022, at Kaiser Medical Center in Oakland, Ca.
Rod was born on Jan. 23, 1934, in San Diego to Claude and Eleanor Stewart (nee Stark).
He graduated from The Citadel in 1956 and served in Korea. After leaving active duty, he went to work for RCA’s new computer division.
In 1962, Rod met his future wife, Joan, while overseeing the installation of an RCA computer system at U.S. Steel in Duluth, Minn. Rod and Joan were married in Duluth on Dec. 4, 1962, and soon moved to St. Joseph, for Rod’s job with RCA. He later took a position in the area with Whirlpool Corp. in Benton Harbor.
During their 35-plus years in the St. Joseph area, Rod and Joan raised two daughters: Sue and Deb. Rod and Joan were active members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, each serving terms on the Vestry. Rod worked as the church treasurer for many years at St. Paul’s and loved doing taxes. He also participated in the Band and Orchestra Parents (BOP) during Deb’s time in high school.
Rod retired from Whirlpool Corp. in 1994 after 20 years. In 1999, he and Joan moved to Newbury Park, Calif., to be closer to his family. In 2007, Rod and Joan moved to San Diego to be near Sue, who was assigned there with the Navy. They moved with Sue to the East Bay area of San Francisco in 2013.
Rod was preceded in death by his parents: Claude and Eleanor; his brothers: Bruce and Andy; and his wife, Joan.
He is survived by his daughters: Sue Stewart of Alameda, Calif., and Deb Stewart of The Woodlands, Texas; his brother-in-law, Haeung Joung of Silverlake, Calif; his nephew, Jon Stewart and Jon’s family in West Hills, Calif.; and several cousins including Linda Davis of Houston, and Sheree Moody of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.
A memorial and interment service will be on April 2, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1700 Santa Clara Ave., Alameda, Calif. A second prayer service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Michigan during the summer of 2022. Instead of flowers, donations may be made in Rod’s name to the American Kidney Fund at kidneyfund.org.
