Robie Boyette Strickland of 8942 West Cobblestone Drive, Zionsville, Indiana, passed away of natural causes surrounded by his loving family in the morning hours of October 12th, 2018 at the age of 80. Robie and his wife, Carol (Moore), had relocated to Indiana in the spring of 2015 from Anchorage, Alaska, where they had resided since March of 1980. Ever a family man, Robie and Carol chose to leave Alaska to be with two of their three grandchildren and enjoy life in the “lower 48”. Robie was born on April 25, 1938 in Nash County, North Carolina to Ernest and Ella Boyette. Subsequently he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Alma and Robie Strickland. A graduate of the Citadel Military College of South Carolina, Robie joined the Federal Aviation Administration in 1961 and stayed in government service with the FAA over 32 years until his retirement in 1994. Along the way, Robie worked as an Engineer, Academy Teacher, and Manager, reaching the GS-15 level. Many states were along that path, starting in North Carolina and including Mississippi, Georgia, Oklahoma, Montana, Washington, and Alaska. Each stop gave Robie greater and greater responsibilities and leadership opportunity, including the Civil Air Patrol when living in Montana, allowing him to develop a leadership style that he has passed along to so many. A devoutly Christian man, he was highly active with his church families and led with calm authority, driven by positivity in all things. Upon his retirement, Robie and Carol traveled the country in their 5th Wheel with their dog, Abby, and truly enjoyed life without ever stopping. Robie volunteered with church construction, helped his sons do major home projects, and spent time with his grandchildren. His experience, expertise, and wisdom were never far from any who asked. Robie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol (Moore); his children Robie B Strickland Jr of Anchorage, AK, Darron K (Beth) Strickland of Madison, WI, and Damon B (Erin) Strickland of Zionsville, IN; his grandchildren Sarah E Strickland, Evan P Strickland, and Paige E Strickland; his great granddaughter Lenore R Bertram; his brothers, Ernest Boyette, Jimmy (Jeannie) Boyette, and John (Peggy) Strickland; his close cousin Oliver (Elizabeth) Hedgepeth; and numerous other cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, Robie was preceded in death by his brother, Ben C. Strickland, Sr. and wife, Diane. Robie will travel to Goldsboro, NC to be interred at Willow Dale Cemetery alongside his family. The family will gather to receive friends on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at Willow Dale Cemetery. On Friday October 19, 2018, the family will receive friends at the home of Edith Mitchell, 206 Bridlepath Drive, Goldsboro, NC. In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family requests donations to Hear Indiana (hearindiana.org), an Indianapolis-based non-profit benefiting children with hearing loss and families who choose to use technology to live in a listened and spoken language world. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
