Robert Ralph Mahar of New London, NH, passed away peacefully on June 19th, 2023 at the age of 77 in the home that he built with his wife Nancy and sons Steve and Jason after a brief battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Ralph, as he was known by his family and friends, left this earth feeling blessed to have a life filled with love, strength, adventure, and a healthy sense of humor. Ralph, lived a full and happy life. He was a loving husband to his wife Nancy who he fell in love with as a young man and was married to for more than 55 years. He was a proud father to his sons Steve and Jason and a proud grandfather to Caroline, Robert, Dale and Jason. As a young boy he grew up in Japan, Greece, and other U.S. Army posts including Arlington, VA. He enjoyed many adventures in his youth including summers with his grandparents and great grandmother, fishing with his grandfather, and shooting his bow and arrow with his dog Larry. As a young man he attended The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, and then fulfilled his military obligation with the U.S. Marine Corps, quickly rising from the rank of E1 to E5. Ralph and Nancy started their life and family together while he served at Camp LeJeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. After fulfilling his duties with the Marines, Ralph began a lifelong career in real estate development and appraisal. Ralph built many houses during his career however, he was most proud of the houses that he built with his sons, teaching them the craft of carpentry, the life skills of working together, and having pride in the accomplishment of a job well done. Ralph and his sons developed a close bond that they shared throughout his life. He retired in 2006 after a diagnosis of stage 4 metastatic melanoma. Ralph beat melanoma, and was able to spend the last 17 years with full health, and strength, watching his family grow and enjoying life through the eyes of his grandchildren as they’ve grown into young adults. Ralph had many passions. Singing to Nancy and playing guitar brought him much joy, along with reading poetry and classical literature. Ralph also loved playing golf with his family and friends at Beaver Meadow GC, and the Country Club of NH. His greatest passion was his family and the life that he had with Nancy. Ralph believed that love was essential to life and he aspired to live his life with purpose, vigor, and sharing love with the people in his life. Ralph was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold W. and Blanche (Hounsel) Mahar, and is survived by his wife Nancy (Holden) Mahar, sons Stephen Grant of Needham MA, his wife Kathleen and their children Caroline and Robert, and Michael Jason of New London NH, his wife Barbara and their children Jason and Dale, and his brother Harold “Hal” Mahar of Nashua NH. Services will be private for the family and held at the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen NH.
