Robert Peter Carson, of John Island, entered into eternal rest on the morning of April 19, 2012, Robert Peter Carson, husband of Deborah Stier Carson. Residence, Johns Island, SC. The relatives and friends of Bob and Deborah are invited to attend his funeral services in The Summerall Chapel, The Citadel, Monday, April 23, 2012 at 12 noon. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL Sunday between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Mr. Carson was born October 20, 1949 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of John Benson Carson and Susan Williamson Carson. He retired as President and CEO of Sand Creek, Inc. Bob was a 1973 graduate of The Citadel, where he began his football career as a walk-on and was awarded a full scholarship after his freshman year. He was the 1972 team captain and was voted the team’s most valuable player. For 24 years, he held The Citadel record for the longest run from scrimmage (95 yards), which would stand until Travis Jervey broke the record in 1994. The Associated Press recognized Carson as a second-team All-Southern Conference performer and as an honorable mention All-American. He was inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2000, Carson established a football scholarship in his name at The Citadel for other walk-on players who distinguished themselves on the field. Bob continued to demonstrate athletic prowess and sportsmanship throughout his life. In 2010, after surviving two bouts of head and neck cancer and a jaw replacement, he was a member of the Dragon Boat Charleston Grand Masters team that won the National Championship. He generously sponsored many local charity golf tournaments, youth soccer teams and, of course, his beloved Citadel Bulldogs. He was a member of the Middleton Hunting Club, Country Club of Charleston, The Citadel Brigadier Club, The Citadel Football Association and the Dragon Boat Charleston. He is survived by his wife; three daughters: Mandy Carson Davis (Chip) of Wadmalaw Island, SC, Cydney Nicole Carson (Brett Epps) of James Island, SC and Erica Leigh Carson of Charleston, SC; two grandchildren: Miles and Merritt Davis; one brother: Pastor John B. Carson, Jr. Fairfield, CA; one sister: Susan Carson Lambert of Lawrenceburg, KY.
