Robert Milton Morrell, Sr., age 80 of Lincolnton, NC, died peacefully at home December 10, 2011, surrounded by his wife, children and his loving dog Gracie. He was born August 7, 1931 to the late Robert and Grayce Morrell. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Morrell, and his brother, Buddy Morrell. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carroll McKinnon Morrell, his son Robert Morrell Jr (wife Marcia) of Lewisville, and daughter Sally Morrell Burroughs (husband Frank) of Waxhaw. His grandchildren, Beth Morrell of Cary, Robert Morrell III (Rob) of Asheville, Sara Ann and Christopher Burroughs of Waxhaw will greatly miss their ‘GrandBob.’ He was a native of Hartsville, South Carolina, where he is still remembered for his skill on the football field. He was a graduate and loyal alumnus of the Citadel in Charleston. After graduation he entered the Air Force, rising to the rank of Captain, flying F-86 fighter jets at the time of the Korean War. After leaving the Air force, he worked for Sonoco Products Company, as an executive, first in Hartsville, then Ohio, before opening the Long Shoals Plant in 1970. He retired in 1991. Robert was an active member of his community and church, serving as a deacon, finance officer and trustee. He loved to visit friends and members of his church with a gift of his delicious baked rolls. He remained athletic throughout his life, playing handball, tennis and golf. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm Monday at Hollybrook Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 3pm at the First Baptist Church of Lincolnton. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The family extends special thanks to his handball partner and friend, Dr. Gordon Crowell (Retired) for his extraordinary help during Robert’s extended illness.
