LOWRY, ROBERT JR. September 10, 1930 ~ September 24, 2004. Graveside services will be Monday at 10 a.m. for Robert Lowry, Jr. at Maple Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Andy Anderson and Rev. Jack Wilson officiating. Laughlin Service Funeral Home will direct. Survivors include his sons, Robert Bud Lowry, III of Avondale Le Estates, GA and John Rand Lowry of San Francisco, CA; daughter, Elizabeth Lowry Burke of Huntsville; sister, Mary Katherine Walker of Huntsville; grandchildren, John, David and Sarah Christopherson of Huntsville. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Nativity. Bobby was a representative for Mass Mutual Insurance Company for many years. He served on the Board of Directors of Regions Bank for 15 years. He was a noted sportsman and member of Ducks Unlimited and Byrd Spring Rod and Gun Club. Mr. Lowry attended Huntsville schools until finishing his freshman year at Huntsville High. He completed prep school at Culver Military Academy, Culver, IN, and later attended The Citadel where he was captain of the golf team. Lowry’s love affair with golf began at an early age when he was taught to play the game by his late father, Bob Lowry, Sr. He was widely known in amateur competition. He competed in the first USGA Junior Amateur Championship in 1948 at Ann Arbor, MI. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur eight times. He played in many other prestigious events around the country. He was runner-up in the Southern Amateur and was a semifinalist in the North-South Amateur, losing to Lanny Wadkins. He also qualified for the U.S. Open. He was a lifelong mmber of the Huntsville Country Club where he won the Club Championship at least 23 times. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Huntsville. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Walker, Gene Diamond, Jim Taylor, Porter Gilbert, Gene Monroe, Austin Williams, Joe Faison, Bryan Bergeron, Joe Hinds and Earl Eastin.
