Dr. Robert J. Black died June 9, 2004 at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, Ga. at the age of 86. He was the son of the late Thomas A. Black and Annie Laurie Thomas Black of Ruffin, S.C. He was a graduate of the Citadel and Tulane Medical School. He served during World War II as a doctor in Europe, attaining the rank of captain, after which he specialized in pediatrics. He was a pediatrician in Rome, Ga., before retiring to Thomasville. His beloved wife, Irene, to whom he had been married for 56 years, also died within the hour of his death. Two brothers, also preceded him in death, Thomas A. Black Jr. and Henry N. Black. He is survived by one brother, Hartwell A. Black of Sumter, S.C.; and one sister, Mrs. A. C. (Anne) Kinard, of Charlotte, N.C. Dr. Black is to be cremated before being placed in the columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery. A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Charlotte, N.C.
