Robert Hampton Howe, Sr., 77, Colonel, USA Retired, died Sunday, April 17, 2011, at his home. A graveside service with military honors, will be 1 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2011, at Beaufort National Cemetery Beaufort. Col. Howe was born in Rock Hill, a son of the late Henry Glen Howe and Lyde Vaughn Howe. He attended Winthrop Training School, and graduated from The Citadel in 1955 with a B.S. in Business Administration. Col. Howe later received a Masters Degree from Shippensburg University. Col. Howe, a 1966 to 1967 Vietnam veteran, attended many military schools in his 31 year military career, and was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Parachutist Badge. He held various command positions, his proudest was as Battalion Commander, First Battalion, 22nd Artillery, 4th Armored Division. His last assignments were as Military Assistant, U.S. Military Committee, NATO and Military Representative’s Liaison. Above all his family was the priority of his life. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Margaret Howze Howe of the home; sons, Robert (Michele) Howe, Jr. and Wade Howe, both of Orangeburg, and Richard (Malinda) Howe of Acworth, Ga.; a sister, Jane Annelle Howe; and a brother, Henry Glen Howe, Jr.; two granddaughters, Amber and Kara; and three step-grandsons, William, Nathan, and Jacob.
