Dr. Robert E Steel, Jr., DDS, died Friday Jan. 14, 2011, at his home on Signal Mountain. He graduated from the McCallie School in 1946 and was named the Distinguished Alumni in 2001. Upon graduation he attended the Citadel where he received a pre-med in 1950.He attended the University of Tennessee Dental School and Medical Units and graduated in 1953. He served as a dental officer and captain at the United States Armed Forces at SHAPE in Paris, France. After military service, he returned to UT Memphis and took a fellowship in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Steel practiced dentistry in Chattanooga for over 50 years. Dr. Steel was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and a Sunday school teacher. He served as chief of the Signal Mountain Auxiliary Police and served on the Signal Mountain Town Council and later held the office of Vice Mayor. Dr. Steel served on the Tennessee Board of Dental Examiners, Dental Study Club and Dental Association where he is a life member. An avid reader of World War II history, Dr. Steel contributed many book reviews to the Chattanooga Times Free Press book page. A native of Chattanooga, Dr. Steel was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Louise Jones Steel. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Jordan Steel; two daughters, Milou Steel Young and her husband, Blake, of Signal Mountain and Preston Steel Adair and her husband, Charlie, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; son Robert E Steel III and his wife, Stacie, of Austin Texas; grandchildren, Sarah Jackson and husband Chris of Charlotte, N.C., Riley and Grace Young, of Signal Mountain, Mauree and Hugh Steel, of Austin Texas, Virginia Watt and Louise Adair, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. A celebration of life for Dr. Steel will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church with Dr. William E Dudley, Dr. Tim Filston and Rev. Margaret Ferguson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, please direct your memorials to Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church or to your favorite charity.
