Colonel Robert E. Markutsa U.S Air Force Retired, 76 of Fairchance, Pa. passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017 at Mount Saint Macrina Manor.
He was born September 3, 1941 in Uniontown, Pa., the son of John and Catherine (Varto) Markutsa.
Bob was a graduate of South Union High School Class of 1959. He was awarded a football scholarship from Citadel Military Academy, Charleston, SC. After graduating with a degree in Mathematics, he entered the U.S. Air Force as 2nd Lieutenant. He then trained as a Navigator the following year in Waco, TX.
The last two years of military service, he was the Base Commander of the 911 Tactical Air Group in Pittsburgh, Pa.
After receiving his Master’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh, he taught at Beaver County Community College and later at Fayette County Area Vocational Technical School.
Bob is survived by his brother, Frank Markutsa; sisters, Catherine Korona, Dorothy Frankhouser, Betty O”Reilly (Terry) and Marie Korona (Joseph); sister-in-law, Emily Markutsa and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Helen Yakubowski; brother, John Markutsa; brother-in-laws, Larry Frankhouser and Edward Korona and sister-in-law, Linda Markutsa.
Bob was a former member of the Fayette County Sr. Golf League, Nemacolin Woodlands Golf League, the 500 Club at Nemacolin Woodlands and the Smithfield Rotary Club. He was a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius R.C. Church in Fairchance, Pa.
Bob never met a person he didn’t like……He was a friend to all.
The family will greet friends and family in the Dean C. Whitmarsh Funeral Home, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, Pa. on Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday, October 27, 2017 until 9:30 p.m. when Prayers of Transfer will be said. The Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. in the SS. Cyril and Methodius R.C. Church, 50 North Morgantown Street, Fairchance, Pa.
Interment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown, Pa. with Military Rites being accorded by the 911th Airlift Wing Honor Guard and General Marshall Amvets Post 103.
