Robert Charles Middaugh, Jr., 84, of Beaufort, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Thursday, December 8, 2022. He was a member of St. Helena’s Anglican Church of Beaufort, SC. The graveside service will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2022, in Christ Church Cemetery, 2304 Highway 17 North, at 2:30 pm. The family will receive friends before the service at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd. from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Born to Robert and Margaret Pinckney Middaugh of Mt. Pleasant, SC, he spent much of his youth swimming, rowing, sailing, and casting for shrimp in Charleston harbor. He held a Master Mariner’s License and taught coastwise and celestial navigation, naval architecture and sailing. His publications, Exercises in Coastwise Navigation and Exercises in Celestial Navigation, are still in use today. He earned his BS in Business Administration at the Citadel in Charleston, SC, and worked in purchasing and traffic management. He served on the adjunct faculty of Trident Technical College, teaching and developing special courses for local industries. Students enjoyed the lively instruction and practical life advice in his classes. Robert is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Cynthia Middaugh and a number of Pinckney cousins.
