Robert C. Brown, Jr., ’64

Dr. Robert “”Bob”” Craig Brown, Jr., age 73, of Northport, AL, died November 12, 2015, at home. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 15, 2015, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel with Pastor Pat Powell officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sara Jo Long Brown and his mother, Bertie Bridges White.
Survivors include his daughters, Jacqueline Rene Millwood of Northport, Ala. and Mary Elizabeth Brown Falls of Northport, Ala.; sister, Robin Ann Shook of Huntersville, N.C.; brothers, David Roland White of Northport, Ala. and Robert Stuart Brown of Atlanta, Ga.; father, Col. Robert C. Brown of South Carolina; and grandchildren, Madison Brooke Falls and Collin Riley Millwood, both of Northport.
Bob was born on August 3, 1942 in Hickory Grove, South Carolina. He received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from The Citadel in 1964. On September 5, 1964, Bob married his sweetheart, Sara Jo Long and thus started their 50 years of marriage which included God, love, laughter, the military, family and professorship.
Bob served his country during the Vietnam War as a First Lieutenant for the Army Corps of Engineers. On April 17, 1967, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal of Meritorious Achievement in ground operations against hostile forces.
Bob received his Master of Science in Civil Engineering in 1966 and his Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Texas at Austin in 1972. He truly enjoyed his teaching as he served as a full professor at the University of Alabama in Civil and Environmental Engineering from 1973-1996. In 1992, he received the AMOCO Foundation Award for Outstanding Undergraduate teaching. His students loved him and he loved them. In 1996, Bob officially retired from his professorship yet, continued to teach part-time.
Bob Brown loved his commitment to his Lord and Savior! He worshipped at the Emanuel Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, where he served his church as a church deacon and he served others through his work on the Missions Committee and his yearly mission work in Peru.
Bob Brown was a committed husband to his wife, Sara Jo, a loving Daddy to his two daughters, Rene and Mary, a hero to his little brother Roland, a sweet son and uncle to his family and a supportive friend to many. Since Sara Jo preceded him in heaven we know she has welcomed him home with open arms.
Pallbearers will be David White, Danny Bailey, Danny Long, Eddie Long, Paul Skelton and Rock Nichols.
Honorary pallbearers are Allen Radcliffe, Northport Police Department and the Northport Fire and Rescue.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Missions, 4612 Rice Mine Road NE, Tuscaloosa, AL 35406.
