Richard O’Brien Hutto, Sr., 84, of Cain St. in Hampton, SC, passed away Tuesday afternoon December 25th, 2012 at his residence after an extended illness. Born August 30th, 1928 in Holly Hill, SC he was the son of the late James Eugene and Mary Ulmer Hutto. He was a graduate of Holly Hill High School and attended The Citadel Military College where he was in the Summerall Guards. Mr. Hutto graduated from The Citadel in 1949 and served his country in the Unites States Army from 1950-53, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal with valor while he served his country. After serving in the Army he served in the Army Reserves from 1953-1965 and in the Army National Guard until 1988. Following his service in the Army he worked at Poole’s Five and Dime in Hampton and was later the owner of Hutto’s Five and Dime, He served as the Town Administrator and finally Mr. Hutto retired as the operator of the Citgo Station in Hampton in 1994. He was an active member of the Hampton United Methodist Church for 56 years where he was a member of the Methodist Men, and taught Sunday school. He was a member of the Evergreen Lodge where he received a 50 years’ service award. Mr. Hutto is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Mims Hutto, three sons: Brien and Jack (Mary) both of Hampton, and Gene (Cindy) of Varnville, SC, two daughters: Linda (Gary) Youmans of Furman, SC, and Lane (Barry) Boykin of Spartanburg, SC, 12 grandchildren: Brandon, Blair, Rich, Cody, Connor, Haley, Grant, Jonah, Addison, Tommy, Mathew, and Josh, three great-grandchildren, one brother Edward Larry (Gerri) Hutto of Edisto Island, SC, special sister-in-law Dixie (Jimmy) O’Cain of Bowman, SC along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother James Marion Hutto. Funeral services will be held Friday December 28th, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Hampton United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. E. Rossiter Chellis and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Hampton Cemetery will Military Honors. Friends may call at the funeral home located at 300 Mulberry St. West; Hampton, SC 29924 (803-943-3352) on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. and until 10 a.m. on Friday when the casket will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
