A funeral service for Col. Richard Lee Tapp, U.S. Army (Ret.), of Columbia, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 26, 2017, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Col. Tapp died Monday, November 20, 2017. Born in Charleston, he was a son of the late William Franklin Tapp and Beulah St. Armand Finch. He was a 1952 graduate of Dreher High School and a 1956 graduate of The Citadel. He went on to receive his MBA from Syracuse University. He served in the United States Army for 30 years. He was Airborne, Jumpmaster, and Ranger qualified and served tours in Vietnam and Germany. He was later assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. After retiring from the Army, Lee worked with his family at Tapp’s Department Store, and then at Carolina Retail Packaging. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Shirley Tapp; children, Virginia T. Ollis (Shane) of Columbia, Woody Woodham (Cindy) of Chapin, Ric Tapp of Charleston, Patricia Alaniz (Marcos) of Lexington, Kentucky; grandchildren, Ginna Roupe (Josiah) of Jacksonville, Florida, Ric Ollis of Columbia, Zachary Woodham, Cooper Woodham, Carson Woodham all of Chapin, Lauren Tapp of Charleston, Alex Alaniz, and Michael Alaniz of Lexington, Kentucky; brother, Tommy Tapp of Columbia; and sister, Marianna Finch of Pelham, Alabama.
