Richard Leonard Crowder, 81, of Ravenel, South Carolina, husband of Judith Mary Crowder, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, October 18, 2023. Richard was born April 23, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, son of the late Richard Stanley Crowder and Helen Nichols Crowder. After attending Valley Forge Military Academy, Richard graduated from The Citadel class of 1964. During the Viet Nam era, he was in the Intelligence Division of the United States Air Force in Alaska. After serving 4 years in the Air Force, he went on to make his career with the Department of Defense in Maryland. In 1969, Richard was sent to work in Harrogate, England, where he met his wife, Judith Mary Weston. Their son, James, was born there in 1976. The family returned to the United States in 1978. Their daughter, Catharine, was born in 1980. After attending Citadel reunions and vacationing on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, they eventually retired to Charleston, South Carolina in 2006. Richard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judith Mary Crowder; son, James Stuart Crowder, wife, Kelly Bowman Crowder and their children, Liam and Emma of Arnold, Maryland;daughter, Catharine Crowder Teeple, husband, Michael Teeple and their children, Michael and Jack of Charleston, South Carolina; and his sister, Marian Crowder of Charleston, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Stanley Crowder; mother, Helen Crowder; sister, Anne Stuart Crowder. Inurnment will take place at Mepkin Abbey. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Poplar Grove Boat House, 4245 Ten Shillings Way, Ravenel, South Carolina 29470.
