Richard Lewis Bettien, 94, of Murrells Inlet, died Thursday, June 21, 2007, at Waccamaw Community Hospital. Memorial services will be Thursday, June 28, 2007, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church. Inurnment will be later in Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. Bettien was born April 10, 1913, in Washington, D.C., a son of the late Richard and Agnes Conlon Bettien. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1966, where he served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a 1938 graduate of The Citadel. Mr. Bettien was a lifetime member of the Assocication of Citadel Men, Murrells Inlet VFW and the Retired Officers Assoc. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Betty Bettien. Surviving are two sons, Daniel Bettien of Murrells Inlet and Stephen Bettien of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Suzanne Rankin of Lancaster, Pa. and Diane B. Auxier of Olney, Md.; a brother, Robert Bettien of Baltimore; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
