Richard Furman Cockfield, age 88 of Vestavia, passed away on September 25, 2018. He was born on September 13, 1930 to the late Ben T. Cockfield and Alice Verline Cockfield. Richard treasured his South Carolina roots and his large family of six brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephewsRichard graduated from The Citadel in 1951. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant overseas in the Korean War. Richard spent over 40 years employed at BellSouth before taking early retirement. He was an active member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. Richard was a volunteer driver for Vestavia Hills Senior Transportation program for many years. In retirement Richard loved golfing, birding and following Alabama’s bald eagles with a group of long-time, faithful friends. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was always happy to drive to Atlanta for their school and sports events. He maintained a love and connection with the Citadel and visited there as often as possible. Richard loved his wife Dottie dearly and their life together in their Vestavia neighborhood and with their children and grandchildren many weekends at Lake Martin. Richard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dottie Jenkins Cockfield, and his children Chris Shull (Mark) and Anne Griffith (Bryan), and his grandchildren Madeline, Jackson, Olivia, Cooper, and Sophie. He is also survived by his sister Jesse Habib and brother Bennie Cockfield and many loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 27, 2018 beginning at 10 am at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church with the funeral service at 11 am. Burial with military honors will follow at 2pm at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, ALIn lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice or to the Alabama Audubon Society or the American Eagle Foundation.
