On Saturday, December 26,2015, “Dick” Basford transitioned
from this life on earth to be with his Heavenly Father and
Savior, Jesus Christ.
Dick was born on August 1, 1933 in Jacksonville, Florida to
LaMell Eleanor Sykes & Gus Aubrey Basford.
He attended local schools & graduated from Andrew Jackson
in 1951. He attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. and
enlisted in the US Army in 1953. After separation from the Army
he held several positions with the City of Jacksonville, later
transferring to the JEA. Dick retired in 1993 as Associate
Managing Director of System Engineering & Operations.
During his career with the JEA, he served as Chairman of the
Engineering Committee for the Southeast Electric Reliability
Council, later serving as Chairman of the Technical Advisory
Committee of the Florida Reliability Electric Council. After
retiring in 1993 he founded a consulting firm trading in electricity
and natural gas.
Dick is survived by his wife and best friend for 40 years, Brenda
(Crawford) Basford; two sons: Mike (Janine) Basford and Deryl
(Margaret) Basford and daughter: Amanda (Dr. Rodney) Keith.
He has 9 grandchildren: Nick, Katie, Taylor, Ryan, Neil, Kinsey,
Benjamin, Spencer & Campbell. He has 4 great grandchildren:
Jordan, A.J., Sadie Grace & Sawyer.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law Pat (Esther) Crawford and
sister-in-law Sheila (Glenn) Ellison along with his lifelong best
friend and fellow Gator, Jim Fortenberry, and faithful furry friend,
Daisy.
Dick was a member of First Baptist Church for over 27 years.
He enjoyed the fellowship and worship with his many friends in
his Bible Study class.
Dick loved his family very deeply, and he and Brenda (Jon) enjoyed
many years of traveling across the USA, Canada & Europe.
He was deeply loved and respected by so many and will be missed
by his family and friends.
A celebration of Dick’s life will be held Thursday, December 31 st .
at 11 :00 a.m. at Gardenview Baptist Church on 3139 Armsdale Road Jacksonville, Florida 32218, behind the Lem Turner Home Depot.
