It is with much sadness that we announce that our father, Dr. Rex E. Stubbs, passed away on December 30, 2017, at Hope Hospice in Ft. Myers, Florida. He was born in Lanier, GA, on August 5, 1925, the son of J.C. Stubbs and Ruth Stubbs. He is survived by his three children, Jane S. Hunston (Jay), of Stuart, FL; Rex E. Stubbs, Jr. (Karen), of Ft Myers, FL; and Laurie R. Leon (Stephen) of Brandon, FL; his wife Dawn Stubbs, of FL. Myers, FL, as well as six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Deborah Ann Stubbs, his former wife, Evelyn S. Stubbs, his parents and all his siblings.
Dr. Stubbs had many beloved memories of family gatherings, activities and his mother’s cooking. One of his favorite recollections was coming home from Georgia Military College to the Brunswick stew his mother had waiting for him. He was very proud of his Georgia roots.
Dr. Stubbs was a graduate of The Citadel, where he majored in civil engineering. He then attended Medical College of Georgia, interned in Athens, GA, and did one year of a surgery residency at Bowman Gray Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. He practiced general medicine in Statesboro, GA and St. Mary’s, GA prior to specializing in anesthesiology at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL.
In 1966, he became the first anesthesiologist in Ft. Myers, FL, and introduced modern anesthesiology to the area. He resided in Ft. Myers until his demise. Dr. Stubbs loved his family and his relatives very much. It would be an understatement to say his family meant the world to him.
Dr. Stubbs loved to read and to play golf. He was a charter member of the Cypress Lake Country Club.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Donations may be made in Dr. Stubbs’ memory at the charity of the donor’s choice
