Raymond W. Paul, 91, of Hanahan, husband of Ruth Walters Paul, entered into eternal rest early Thursday morning January 2, 2014. The relatives and friends of Mr. Raymond Paul are invited to attend his funeral services on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at one o’clock p.m. at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from eleven-thirty a.m. at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home until time of service. Raymond was born September 19th, 1922, in Oakgrove, GA to the late John L. Paul, Sr. and Nettie Lynes Paul. Raymond retired from Norfolk-Southern Railroad. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked at the GARCO plant in North Charleston. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He used the GI Bill to attend The Citadel as a Veteran Student and graduated with honors in 1957. While attending The Citadel with a wife and four children, he worked various part-time and full-time jobs to support his family. After graduation, he became Credit Manager at W. T. Grant Department Store. Later, he became owner of Paul’s Shell Service Station on Meeting Street. He helped start the South Carolina Service Station Dealers Association of which he later became Director. During this time, he also worked on the railroad. Raymond was a member of Ferndale Baptist Church. As a longtime member, he served as Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Director and Deacon. Raymond moved to Columbia, SC, and Augusta, GA, for short periods of employment but his heart always remained at Ferndale. Raymond is survived by his wife of twelve years, Ruth Walters Paul; and four children: Patricia P. Guarneri (Tony) of Goose Creek, SC, Raymond W. Paul, Jr. (Kay) of Summerville, SC, James W. Paul (Linda) of Midlothian, VA, and Richard J. Paul (Cheryl) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three step-children: Leonard Hunter (Kim) of Hanahan, SC, Shirley H. Greenwell of Simpsonville, SC, and David Barrentine of Reston, Virginia; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Raymond is also survived by sisters, Shirley P. Coffin (Grange) of Meggett, SC, and Vivian P. Renaud (Paul) of Edgewater, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Juanita Y. Paul and his siblings: John C. Paul, Lillie P. Shea, Ruth P. Whiteley, Arthur L. Paul, Louis B. Paul, John L. Paul Jr., and William V. Paul.
