Randolph “Randy” Kent Owens Sr., 79 of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2023.
Randy was born on May 1, 1944, in Hemingway, SC and was one of eleven children.
As a teenager, he drove a school bus and then worked on a tugboat. He loved to talk about those days. Drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War, he was stationed in Germany as a mechanic and truck driver. After graduating from The Citadel in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, he went on to become a licensed general contractor and owner of J.K. Construction Company.
Randy was known for his quiet disposition and funny sayings that always made his children laugh. He was a beloved member of the Charleston Yacht Club spending his Wednesday and Sunday nights visiting with his friends there. He loved helping people solve problems whether it was building something or figuring out the best way to handle the issue. In his spare time, he loved watching Perry Mason, Charlie Chan and Alabama football, going to the beach and taking naps with the family cat, Fritz.
Randy is preceded in death by his father, Roy Luther Owens, his mother, Nettie Mae (Cribb) Owens and two brothers, Lutrell Owens and Terry Owens.
Randy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Williams Owens, daughter, Jane Owens Clegg (Lin) and son, Randolph Kent Owens, Jr. (Tracey) as well as five brothers and 3 sisters.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation – James Island, 347 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412, 843-614-8494.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, Charleston, SC 29412.
