Ralph Montague “Monk” Laffitte of Estill, South Carolina, died peacefully at his home on August 3, 2018. Mr. Laffitte was the son of the late Elizabeth Lucius Laffitte and Moses Tucker Laffitte and was born in Estill on August 25, 1925. After graduating from Estill High School, he attended The Citadel until it was closed for World War II. At that time, he entered the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain. Mr. Laffitte graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1949 and married Elizabeth Ann Usher, formerly of Columbia, in 1950. Mr. Laffitte was a founding director of the Loan and Exchange Bank, now Palmetto State Bank, and served on the Board of Directors since 1955. He was a past Chairman of The Exchange Bank, the Young Bankers Division of the South Carolina Bankers Association, and the South Carolina Bankers Association. He was formerly a member of the South Carolina State Board of Financial Institutions, the South Carolina State Board of Education, the Hampton County Board of Education, the University of South Carolina Education Foundation, and the American Bankers Association Government Relations Council. He served as a Director of NationsBank of South Carolina, the Cherokee Life Insurance Company, and the Medical University of South Carolina Board of Directors. He was a deacon of Lawtonville Baptist Church where he and his wife were members. Mr. Laffitte will be remembered by those who knew him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, confidant, and as the quintessential, southern gentleman. Surviving are Mr. Laffitte’s son, Dr. Ralph Montague Laffitte, Jr. and wife Carol of Greenville; daughter-in-law, Linder Jackson Laffitte of Charleston; daughter, Elizabeth Laffitte Malinowski and husband Jan of Beaufort; grandchildren, Montague Laffitte, III and wife Lauren, Carolyn Bradley and husband Tripp, Othniel Laffitte and wife Kate, Usher, Sydney and Mary Madison Laffitte, Richard, Ted and Libby Malinowski; and great-grandchildren, Monty, McNeill and Bell Laffitte. Mr. Laffitte is also survived by his brother, Dr. M.T. Laffitte, Jr. and wife Emma; sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Cassels Laffitte; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Laffitte was predeceased by Lib, his beloved wife of 67 years, and his son, Sterling Jinks Usher Laffitte. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Mr. Laffitte’s nephew, Dr. Lucius Laffitte, who provided exceptional medical care to Mr. Laffitte over the years. The family would also like to thank his caregivers: Carolyn Stokes, Jacky Mixon, Elnora Jones, Mamie Wilson, Tonya Smith, Maelynn Haynes, Ruby Taylor, and Patricia Hightower. Graveside services will be held on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.
