Phillip Reeves “Phil” Jurney, 55, of Charlotte, N.C., passed away on August 19, 2021 at Novant Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on November 9, 1965 in Charlotte, a son of the late Dr. Henry Clay Jurney, Sr. and Jane Taylor Pate Jurney.
Phil received his degree from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. He continued his studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he earned his MBA. He also completed studies at the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University.
A lifelong native of Charlotte, Phil has served the banking and finance industry for over 30 years. Phil has served as a board member and member of the executive and development committees of Junior Achievement. He also served on The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and Boy Scouts of America. Before moving from Charlotte, he was an active member of Sardis Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon and Elder. While living in Cornelius he attended and served at Bethel Presbyterian Church.
He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed numerous trips to Costa Rica. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his house in Ocean Isle Beach. He had a great laugh and never met a stranger. Phil will be deeply missed by all.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Martha Funderburk Jurney; son, Taylor Reeves Jurney; daughter, Rachel Rivers Jurney; mother, Jane Taylor Pate Jurney; brother, Henry Clay Jurney, Jr; brother, Robert Pate Jurney (Stephanie); special in-laws, Maxie and Ellen Funderburk; sister-in-law, Ann Funderburk Anderson (Allan); and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Henry Clay Jurney, Sr. and sister, Melissa Jane Jurney.
The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at 10 am Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Rd., Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Interment will be at the Memorial Bell Tower at The Citadel at a later date.
