Philip S. Minges, Jr., 91, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Born December 1, 1923 in Charleston, SC, he was the son of the late Philip Semon Minges, Sr. and Rose Harley Minges.
Philip graduated from Charleston High School in 1941. While attending Clemson University, he enlisted in the Army during World War II. He was an infantryman assigned to the Eleventh Armored Division. Philip was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and awarded The Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He concluded his military service with the rank of Colonel in the US Army Reserves.
After World War II, he returned to Charleston, where he graduated from The Citadel in 1948. In 1950, Philip moved to Camden,SC and retired after 32 years with DuPont as a civil engineer. Following his retirement, Philip began a new career in public service. He served 4 years on the Camden City Council and 8 years as Mayor of Camden.
He was a founding member of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Camden and was most recently a member of St. Andrew’s Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
In addition to his parents, Philip was preceded in death by his son, Philip Semon Minges, III and a sister, Irma Minges Lea.
He is survived by Patrecia Bayman Minges, his wife of 65 years; his daughters, Sherry Minges Forrest of Wilson, NC, Laurie Minges Thornhill and her husband John G. of Charleston, SC; a son Richard Bayman Minges and his wife Susan of Charlotte, NC. Philip’s family also includes his grandchildren, Reagan Jackson, Elizabeth Jackson, Lucy Thornhill, Philip Minges, Sarah Minges and Henry Minges. He also has a great-grandchild, Mary McDowell Jackson.
A memorial service to celebrate Philip’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Summerall Chapel at The Citadel. His family will receive friends at Carolina Yacht Club, 50 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409 (for Chaplain’s Discretionary Fund) and St. Andrew’s Church, 440 Whilden St, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464.
