Paul Richard Robinson, 97, of Asheville, NC, passed away at the Four Seasons Hospice in Flat Rock, NC, on Friday, 13 July 2018. He had been a resident of Asheville since 1952.
Paul was born in Darlington SC , 28 March 1921, and was the only son of Natalie Augusta Alexander, a Darlington native, and Jacob Robinson, a native of Baltimore, MD.
He graduated from St Johns High School in Darlington, and The Citadel Military College, in Charleston, SC, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1943. Paul took off his Citadel uniform and put on an Army uniform within a week. He was assigned to the 488th Light Ponton Engineers and traveled over Western Europe, building removable bridges for the American troops during WWII.
After WW II, Paul worked on the Alaskan Highway, until he was called back into the Army, during the Korean War.
He married his first wife, Jean Lorraine Kite, in 1952, and moved to Asheville, NC, where he was a Civil Engineer with the NC Department of Transportation. He retired in 1984. He was predeceased by Jean in 1972.
Paul was a faithful member of Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church for 50 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, and his only sibling, Frances Elizabeth Robinson, of Florence, SC, in1969.
Paul is survived by his son, Ron S Robinson and wife Linda, of Taylors, SC.
Paul is also survived by his wife, of 45 years, Geneva Anderson May, and step-daughter, Edie May Robinson (Robert Kern) of Candler, NC , one grandson, Paul Stuart Robinson, wife Nicole, and, two great-granddaughters, Oswyn Evelynn, and Olive Elliott Robinson, all of Aiken, SC.
A much loved and appreciated friend, Andrea Lee, cannot be thanked enough for her many kindnesses, soothing voice, and gentle touch, during the last two years of Paul’s life. His face would light up when she entered the room.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Paul’s name to the Four Seasons Palliative Care and Hospice, 571 S Allen Rd, Flat Rock, NC 28731. They made the last two weeks of his life, so much easier for his family.
Memorial donations may also be made in Paul’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
