Paul Maurice Fox died at his residence in Charleston on August 9 at the age of 82. A life-long Charlestonian, he was born on July 21, 1931 to the late Sarah Mendelson and Otto Fox. Always a gentleman, he was known for upholding the highest moral and ethical standards. His word was his bond. A lover of all people, he championed honesty, equality and justice for all. His warm smile and engaging personality developed the highest level of trust and disarmed any situation, evoking peace and harmony. He worked hard and long not only to do things right, but to exceed in doing them the honorable way. He was a mentor, teacher, and advisor to many colleagues and friends, becoming a significant part of their lives, families, and communities. Maurice Fox, a top honor graduate from the Citadel in 1953, was a member of the Summerall Guard, commanded the Air Force battalion, achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served as the Chair of the Round Table. He also served in the Korean War. He met the love of his life, Joan Warshauer, when he was still in high school and they married the day after his graduation from the Citadel. He joined the family business, Fox Music House, soon thereafter, becoming President after his father retired. He passed the business to his son Charles in 1993. During his tenure as president, he was a board member of the National Association of Music Merchants and was President of the Young National Association of Music Merchants. Like his father before him, he took great pride in the connections he made while selling church organs and musical instruments to many generations. Under his leadership, Fox Music founded the Trident Honor Band, the first integrated band in the state. In April, 2013 Maurice Fox’s son Charles and Fox Music House received the South Carolina Arts Commission Verner award for business, for supporting the arts in the schools and in the community at large, a nod to the legacy he created. From an early age, Maurice Fox was one of the most accomplished leaders of the Charleston community. He was especially active in the Jewish Community. A life-long member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel, he served as president, was a successful fundraiser, and frequent committee chair. He was president of the Organization for Rehabilitation and Training (ORT), a non-profit, global, Jewish organization that promotes education and training in over 100 countries. He served as president of the Charleston Jewish Community Center. He also was a member of the Hebrew Benevolent Society and was active in the Hebrew Orphan Society. He was a leader in AZA, a Jewish youth organization, and as an adult he advised youth and coached sports teams. He chaired the board of Addlestone Hebrew Academy and was committed to supporting a vibrant and active Jewish community at home and world wide. He took on equivalent leadership roles in the larger community. He chaired the Uptown Merchant’s Association, was a founding member of Charleston Crisis Ministries where he served as Treasurer as well as the chair of its real estate committee that purchased the facility where the Shelter is currently located. He was immediate past president of the Dockside Association, a member of the City of Charleston neighborhood association, a past member of the Rotary Club of Charleston, a member of the executive committee of the association of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce, an avid supporter of the Charleston Ports authority, and vice president of the Charleston Animal Society as well as chair of fundraising for CAS’s new location. A life-long learner, he was a current student at the College of Charleston where he attended classes with his dear friend, Arnold Prystowsky. Devoted husband, passionate father, proud grandfather and great grandfather he is survived by his wife, Joan Warshauer Fox; his five children, Charles (Missee) Fox of Charleston, SC, Lowell Fox of New York, Walter Fox of Charleston, SC, Diane Fox of Charleston, SC and Jenni (Meir) Levin of New York; 16 Grandchildren, Sadie (Josh) Barocas, Anna (Cameron) Burnette, Daniel Fox, Joseph Fox; Jessica Fox, Charna (Daniel) White, Moshe Prystowsky, Simon Prystowsky, Cara Prystowsky, Tova (Jarod) Rosenfeld, Eli Levin, Atara Levin, Sarah Levin, Chaya Levin, Pnina Levin and Leah Levin; two great grandchildren and his brother, Harold Fox.
