Col. Paul B. Horton, 96, of 540 Little Creek Drive, Leesville, SC, passed away peacefully August 26, 2008, in his home surrounded by love. Services for Col. Horton will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 29 at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Batesburg-Leesville Chapel, 256 Main Street, Leesville, SC, with the Rev. Mitch Evans officiating. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Batesburg-Leesville, SC, Rotary Club. Interment will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens, 3111 Delree Street, West Columbia, SC, with military honors. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 28 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Born in Kershaw, SC, March 7, 1912, he was the son of the late E.L. and Lois Virginia Bell Horton. He was married to Jane Boney Barrett Horton for 25 years. Col. Horton was a 1935 graduate of The Citadel, with a B.S. in chemistry, and was a member of both the boxing and football teams. He was principal, teacher and coach at Indiantown High School, Cades, SC, 1935-1936. He proudly served his country during World War II with the Army Air Force. Assignments as chemical officer 1940-45, HQ AAB MacDill Field, HQ III Bomber Command, HQ XX1 Bomber Command, HQ 2nd AF and HQ 13th AF-Philippines. He was awarded a Certificate of Meritorious Service Award for duties with HQ, AAF, Washington, DC. He also earned a B of CERE from Georgia Tech 1948. Upon graduation he began a career with General Electric in their engineering department, manufacturing ceramic high voltage insulators from 1948-1974. He was supervisor of R and D and received the Managerial Award in 1951 and two patents. He was a registered professional engineer. In 1961 he served as chairman of the Baltimore Washington Section of American Ceramic Society. Upon retirement he was consulting engineer for Ceramic manufacturing in Puerto Rico, 1976-1979. He was a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Batesburg and a longtime member of the Batesburg-Leesville, SC, Rotary Club, president 1987-88. Surviving Col. Horton, in addition to his wife of the home, are: two stepdaughters, Janie (Scotty) Scircle of Gilbert, and Beth (Tillman) Mathias of Lexington; five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, brother, Todd (Lib) Horton, Advance, NC; aunt, Inez Caskey of Columbia; special niece, Ann Trammell, Charlotte, NC, nieces and nephews, cousins and many loving relatives, friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife of 41 years, Flossie M Sox, his sister, Mildred, brothers, Wilbur and Henry, and nephew, Bob Holland.
