The Citadel Alumni Association Contributes to Scholarships

The Citadel Alumni Association capped off a banner year of giving at its annual membership meeting. The Association will contribute $900,000 to support college operations, CAA legacy cadet and need-based scholarships, and enhance The Citadel’s Service to Country Tuition Scholarships and National Service Room and Board Scholarships for ROTC cadets.

LtGen Lawrence D. Nicholson, USMC, Ret., '79

Nicholson’s distinguished 39-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps included four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. His leadership roles ranged from Commanding General of III Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Forces Japan in 2015 to Commander of the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, CA (2012–2015). He also served as Senior Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense (2010–2012), Commanding General of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade in Afghanistan (2009–2010), and Commanding General of the 5th Marine Regiment in Iraq (2006–2007). Nicholson was seriously wounded in 2004 while serving with Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division, during Operation Phantom Fury, the second battle of Fallujah, Iraq.

His awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and the Purple Heart.
