The Citadel Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Highlight Robert R. Hill, Jr., '88 Robert Hill retired in 2020 as Chief Executive Officer of South State Corporation, a bank holding company serving communities across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. During his distinguished career, he held several key leadership roles, including President and Chief Operating Officer. In 2011, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Charlotte Branch. Businessweek recognized Hill as one of just 98 CEOs under age 40 in the United States — and one of 140 worldwide — leading publicly traded companies on the NASDAQ or New York Stock Exchange, a rare and prestigious distinction among his peers. Hill said, “The Citadel adopted me when I was a 17-year-old kid; it made me a man and taught me what leadership was all about. March 10, 1923: The original Avenue of Remembrance was dedicated. "Originally it was the road that went around three sides of the parade ground. When the library road was built it, too, was called the Avenue of Remembrance. Having four different roads all called by the same name caused confusion when giving directions. To remedy this The Citadel took the following action in the 1970s. The road in front of the library was officially designated 'The Avenue of Remembrance,' while the other three sides, the original 'Avenue of Remembrance,' were given the names of the roads of which they are extensions." askus.library.citadel.edu/faq/106000

On March 8, 2016, the funeral for Pat Conroy, '67, was held at St Peter’s Catholic Church on Lady’s Island. "So I’m going to tell you how to get to my funeral. You walk up.
