  • March 10, 1923: The original Avenue of Remembrance was dedicated.

"Originally it was the road that went around three sides of the parade ground. When the library road was built it, too, was called the Avenue of Remembrance. Having four different roads all called by the same name caused confusion when giving directions. To remedy this The Citadel took the following action in the 1970s. The road in front of the library was officially designated 'The Avenue of Remembrance,' while the other three sides, the original 'Avenue of Remembrance,' were given the names of the roads of which they are extensions."

  • On March 8, 2016, the funeral for Pat Conroy, '67, was held at St Peter’s Catholic Church on Lady’s Island.

"So I’m going to tell you how to get to my funeral. You walk up. You find the usher waiting outside, and here’s your ticket… You put up your Citadel ring. Let them check for the 2001, and each one of you, I want you to say this before you enter the church at which I’m going to be buried. You tell them, 'I wear the ring.'"

We honor Casimir Pulaski on his birthday—a hero of the American Revolutionary War and a key figure in the Siege of Savannah. Alongside Michael KovĂ¡ts de Fabricy, Pulaski is recognized as a founder of the U.S. Cavalry.

Pulaski was mortally wounded during the Battle of Savannah, and his remains were later interred beneath the Casimir Pulaski Monument. KovĂ¡ts was killed in action during the Siege of Charleston while leading a cavalry charge against British forces.

In 1959, Mark W. Clark proposed naming a field at The Citadel in KovĂ¡ts’ honor. Today, a memorial stands at the west entrance of Kovats Field.
