March 10, 1923: The original Avenue of Remembrance was dedicated. "Originally it was the road that went around three sides of the parade ground. When the library road was built it, too, was called the Avenue of Remembrance. Having four different roads all called by the same name caused confusion when giving directions. To remedy this The Citadel took the following action in the 1970s. Today in History: March 6 We honor Casimir Pulaski on his birthday—a hero of the American Revolutionary War and a key figure in the Siege of Savannah. Alongside Michael Kováts de Fabricy, Pulaski is recognized as a founder of the U.S. Cavalry. Pulaski was mortally wounded during the Battle of Savannah, and his remains were later interred beneath the Casimir Pulaski Monument. Kováts was killed in action during the Siege of Charleston while leading a cavalry charge against British forces. In 1959, Mark W. Clark proposed naming a field at The Citadel in Kováts’ honor.
