Col. Oren L. Herring Jr., 78, husband of Virginia Simmons Herring, of Mount Pleasant, departed this life Oct. 28, at a local nursing home. A native of Spartanburg, he was born March 17, 1924, to the late Oren L. Herring Sr. and Beatrice Reid Herring. Col. Herring entered The Citadel in 1941. Col. Herring was employed by The Citadel in 1949, where he taught for 39 years, and was head of the Department of Electrical Engineering. Surviving Col. Herring is his wife of 52 years; a daughter, Virginia Herring Roberson, and her husband, Ray, of Canadys; a son, Oren Hamilton Herring, and his wife, Adelaide, of Mount Pleasant; a sister, Beatrice Herring Rowsey, of Inman; two cousins; five grandchildren; and one great- grandson. Also survived by his many former students and colleagues of The Citadel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
