- Dr. Hammond attended The Citadel for 3 years before enrolling at Duke as a second year medical student. He was a pioneer in the treatment of gestational trophoblastic disease and a founder of the Southeast Regional Trophoblastic Disease Center for the treatment of these diseases. Dr. Hammond was a nationally regarded expert in the area of menopause and hormone replacement therapy. He was the Edwin Crowell Hamblen Distinguished Professor of Reproductive Biology and Family Planning and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Duke University from 1980 to 2002. He was named Professor Emeritus, Duke University, 2002.
- Dr. Hammond was President of a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), 2002-2003; the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society (AGOS), 1994; the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG).
