S. Marvin Griffin
Class of 1929
Hometown: Bainbridge, Ga.
- Governor of Georgia, 1955-1959, and Lt. Governor of Georgia, 1948-1954.
- Griffin commanded a Georgia National Guard anti-aircraft battery during World War II, with service in New Guinea in the Pacific. He served as Adjutant-General of the Georgia National Guard with the rank of Brigadier General from 1944-1947.
- In 1968, Griffin was temporarily a stand-in candidate for Vice President of the United States on George Wallace's American Independent Party. He was replaced by retired US Air Force General Curtis LeMay, but remained on the ballot in 27 states.
- As governor, Griffin opposed integration of Georgia schools. The Citadel administration and Corps of Cadets reject and totally repudiate the policy of racial discrimination he presided over during his term. History is never erased so all must be made aware and learn from this period of history.
