Dr. Hampden Dubose

- Dubose attended the SCMA for two years and took part in the Battle of Tulifinny Creek Dec. 7-9, 1864, as a member of the Battalion of State Cadets.
- Dubose attended Columbia Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1872. He later received the Doctor of Divinity from Westminister College, Fulton, Missouri. DuBose was elected Moderator of the Southern Presbyterian Church Synod in 1890 and Moderator of the Southern Presbyterian Church Conference in 1891. Dubose is the author of numerous theological works in both English and Chinese.
- As a missionary to China from 1872-1910, Dubose was a prominent leader in the effort to end the opium trade. As the first President of the Anti-Opium League, he brought world wide attention to the problem, convincing Chinese and world leaders, including the British and American governments, to effectively end the opium trade in China. For his efforts to end the opium trade, Dubose was memorialized by the Emperor of the Qing dynasty with a stone tablet in Suzhou.
