A retired U.S. Navy Captain, he served in The White House as Special Assistant to President George W. Bush for Defense Policy and Strategy from 2005 to 2008 where he directed the President?s personal defense staff and helped devise the 2007 surge in Iraq. As Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs from 2001 to 2005 he managed the Defense Department?s relations with 27 Near East and South Asian countries to include Iraq and Afghanistan. Previously he had served as a Navy Legislative Fellow in the office of House Speaker Newt Gingrich and as Special Advisor for National Security Affairs to Vice President Dick Cheney. He commanded an aviation squadron, an amphibious assault ship, a three-ship amphibious ready group and is a combat veteran of the 1991 Desert Storm air campaign.
