COL William J. Magil
Class of 1846
A member of The Citadel's first graduating class, he was also the college's first graduate to serve in the US Army (Mexican War, 1847). Later he was Commandant of Cadets at Georgia Military Institute, a premier 4-year college up to its closure (due to Sherman's advance and burning of Atlanta) in 1864. He served the confederacy by commanding the 1st Georgia Infantry during The War Between The States.
