- Tangney spent his entire 35 year distinguished military career in Special Operations. He saw service in Vietnam with the Army's Special Forces (MACV-SOG-CCS). Tangney has commanded at all levels of the Special Operations community, including Commanding General, Special Operations Central Command, Commanding General, US Army JFK Special Warfare Center and School, Commander-in-Chief, US Army Special Operations Command and Deputy Commander-in-Chief US Special Operations Command. Tangney retired from the Army in November 2002.
- Tangney's military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star with V, Bronze Star with 2 oak leaf clusters, and Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
