Neil Kevin Shannon, 65, of Hattiesburg MS passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at Forrest General Hospital. Visitation will be Monday, February 3 at Hattiesburg Community Church from
10am – 11:30am with services immediately following at 11:30am. Burial will be Tuesday, February 4 at the Biloxi National Cemetery at 2:30pm.
Neil was born on June 16, 1959, in Brooklyn, NY. He was of the Catholic faith. In 1982 he graduated from the Citadel Military College of South Carolina with a BA in History with emphasis on the Civil War, WWl and WWll, and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served at Fort Stewart Georgia and Fort Sill Oklahoma as Field Artillery Fire Support Officer. After subsequently serving in the Army National Guard for a time, he settled in Orlando, FL, and became a paralegal with several Personal Injury law firms in Orlando . This led him to employment with the Social Security Administration Office of Disability Adjudication and Review in Orlando. In 2005 he transferred to the Hattiesburg office where he retired in 2021 after 20 years of service.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Grady Shannon and Donald Kieran Shannon. He is survived by his wife of 5 years, Debbie Palmer Shannon, his brother and sister-in-law Kieran and Donna Shannon, his step-mother Suong Shannon, his 4-legged fur babies- Jack, Tinkerbell, and Bells, and many, many Citadel Class of 1982 brothers.
He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
