Nancy Hollister Shipman Coursey, age 83, of Lynchburg, passed away on October 4, 2022, at home. She was the wife of the late William S. Coursey III.
Born on February 9, 1939, in Hartford, Conn., she was the daughter of the late George Herbert and Alice Hollister Shipman. She was a direct descendant of the Hollister’s, founders of Glastonbury, Conn. in 1636.
She was a graduate of the College of Charleston and the Citadel Graduated School with a M.Ed. in Clinical Counseling. She was on the Dance Theatre of Lynchburg Board, the Lynchburg Historical Foundation Board and the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors. She was a member of the Page Turner’s Book Club and the Poplar Forest Chapter of the DAR. Her love of old homes resulted in the restoration of five homes in Lynchburg and in other southern states. Her travels took her to Newfoundland, Eastern and Western Europe and Russia.
She is survived by her son, Bainon Myles Coursey of Black Mountain, N.C., and his wife, Jennifer Trippe and granddaughter, Mathilda Greenlee Coursey; one brother, Robert Garfield Shipman (Nancy) of Glastonbury, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Susan Underwood (William) of Andalusia, Ala.; a brother-in-law, James B. Coursey (Helen) of Marietta, Ga., and many nieces and nephews of Conn., Ga., and Ala.
A memorial service will be held at a private location.
