Miriam Best Altman, 88, of Summerville, entered into eternal rest on February 13, 2016 at The Village at Summerville. Mrs. Altman was born on Feb. 5, 1928 in Galivants Ferry, SC. She was a graduate of Aynor High School, Columbia College, and the Masters Program at The Citadel. She has been an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church since 1956. She was a member of Charles Peace Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women Herbert McElhany Circle. She taught at Summerville School District II for 32 years. After retirement, she served as a volunteer at Trident Hospital, Second Chance, and Meals on Wheels. She was known for her excellent cooking, and blessed her family, community, and those in need or ill with her baked goods. Miriam is the widow of Alexander Bruce Altman, Jr., and the daughter of the late Jamie M. Best and Laura Wingard Best. She is survived by a sister, Hattie Best Polk, and a brother, Pressley Dorn Best. She was predeceased by two sisters, Barbara Best Shelly and Earl Best Lewis, and two brothers, Jamie M. Best, Sr. and Fred Garrison Best. Survivors include a daughter, two sons and their spouses: Carol Altman Cotter and Col. Stephen D. Cotter of Summerville; John Wingard Altman and Dodie Boyle Altman of Summerville; and Alexander Bruce Altman, III and Phala Robinson Altman, of Rutherfordton, NC. She is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Kim Cotter Baile and Rev. Charles Baile of Gaithersburg, MD and their children Haddon, Elise, and Karis; Stephen Tradd Cotter and Olga Katic Cotter of Liberty, SC and their daughter Heidi; John Pressley Altman of Summerville; Garry Jennings Harley, Jr. and Arianna Harley of Greenville, SC and their children Taylor, Ranna, and Jennings; Bryan David Altman of Rutherfordton, NC; and Alexander Bruce Altman, IV and Alyson Burk Altman of Charlotte, NC and their son Bruce. Visitation will be at Parks Funeral Home on Friday, February 19, 2016 from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church, 118 West 3rd South St., Summerville, SC on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 10 am, with burial to follow at 4pm at Sandy Plain United Methodist Church, 17475 Pee Dee Rd North, Galivants Ferry, SC.
