Dr. Michael Reid McMillan, 68, died suddenly Thursday, December 24, 2009 of natural causes. Dr. McMillan was born August 28, 1941 in Conway, the son of the late Brigadier General Hoyt (U.S.M.C., Retired) and Sara Sherwood McMillan. He was a retired orthopedic surgeon who was on the staff of Conway Medical Center for 25 years. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Conway. He received a B.S. from The Citadel in 1963, an M.D. From Duke University School of Medicine in 1967, serving internships at Johns Hopkins University/Baltimore City Hospitals and residencies at Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children/Greenville General Hospital. He served his country in the U.S. Navy where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During his military career, he was a physician and surgeon assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Regiment, 3rd Marine Division of the United States Marine Corps, serving with Charlie Med in the field near the DMZ during the Vietnam War. His decorations included the Vietnamese Service Medal (4 stars) with Marine Combat Insignia, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Citation (Gallantry Cross), Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Combat Action Ribbon. Dr. McMillan was chairman of the Burroughs Foundation, a director of Burroughs Company, a director and treasurer of Snow Hill Company, and a former director of Burroughs and Chapin Company. He was an active member of The Third Marine Division Association, Horry Citadel Club and The Citadel Alumni Association. He was a Master Tree Farmer. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed by all, especially his family, former patients and classmates from Conway High School Class of 1959. Survivors are one brother, James Marshall (Susan) McMillan of Conway, and their children, Douglas Hoyt (Shelly) McMillan of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ashley Reid McMillan (Billy) Connell of Mt. Pleasant and Neil Patrick McMillan of Baltimore. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 27, 2009 in Lakeside Cemetery with Dr. Bob Guffey officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Sunday, December 27, 2009 at the Graveside before the service. Memorials may be made to, the Burroughs Foundation, P.O.
