Merle Rice Montague, Jr., 93, of Windsor, NC, passed away January 31, 2019, at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. He was born January 10, 1926, to Merle Rice Montague, Sr. and Mabel Beasley Montague of Colerain. He graduated from Windsor High School and enrolled at The Citadel in 1942 where he was a member of Bravo Company. During World War II, he served his country in the 78th Infantry Division. His tour of duty included action in the Battle of the Bulge. Upon completion of service, he received his degree at The Citadel in 1949. He returned to Windsor following graduation, where he worked with the American Tobacco Company for 42 years. He was a member of Windsor United Methodist Church.
Merle was predeceased by his parents; wife, Edith Whitmel White Montague; son, Merle Rice Montague III; and sister, Shirley Claire Montague Stubbs.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah “Debbie” Montague of Chapel Hill, and Elizabeth Claire “Beth” Montague of Cary, and son, John Merle Montague of Raleigh.
The Montague family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Sharon Hathaway for the care and support she provided over the last 2 years.
Memorial contributions may be made to Windsor United Methodist Church.
Graveside service will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 5th, at Edgewood Cemetery followed by a reception at Windsor United Methodist Church and visitation at the home.
