Marian Duke Daniel, 74, of Summerville, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 15th, 2010, at Trident Medical Center. Ms. Daniel was born in Lake City on November 21st, 1935. She was the daughter and only child of the late George Henry Duke and the late Margaret Leize Rickenbaker Duke. She was a member of Lake City First Baptist Church, and later, Montreat Presbyterian Church in Montreat, North Carolina. Ms. Daniel graduated with honors from Coker College in 1957 with a B.A. in English and Vocal Performance. She received her M.Ed. with a specialization in reading and learning disabilities from The Citadel. With a lifelong love of learning and sharing that with others, Ms. Daniel began teaching in 1957 at Mount Pleasant High School. In 1959, she returned home to teach at Lake City Elementary School, and in 1964, became founding director of the kindergarten/early childhood education program at Lake City First Baptist Church. Ms. Daniel spent the majority of her career teaching high school English and Literature in at Summerville Intermediate School and Fort Dorchester High School, in Summer-ville, SC. Ms. Daniel was a member and past president of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teaching sorority. She retired from Dorchester County School District # 2 after thirty-five years in the education field. She was a dedicated, beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and educator, who will be remembered for the time, attention, and devotion she gave to all who knew her – and especially for the deep love that she gave her family. Ms. Daniel’s surviving family includes her two children: Lynne Daniel Ivey, and her husband Derrick, of Durham, NC, and Asheville, NC; and James Daniel and his wife, Sherley, of Summerville; and her three grandchildren, Steven Edward Daniel, Christopher Michael McClure, and Tyler James Daniel all of Summerville; and her two first cousins, Sidney E. Rickenbaker and his wife, Hilda, of Summer-ville; and Charlotte Rickenbaker Harvey, and her husband, James, of Columbia. Graveside services for Ms. Daniel will be held at eleven o’clock a.m., Monday, April 19th, 2010 in the Lake City Memorial Park. Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge. Tags: CGC 1993
